The comprehensive study, which surveyed more than 6,000 travelers across six geographies, shines a light on how in-destination experiences are now the most important factor in the travel decision-making process. 

  • Experiences are truly the driving force in travel spending: The study revealed 9 in 10 travelers globally plan to spend the same or more on travel activities in 2024, despite economic uncertainty. 
    • Global travelers noted that in planning 2024 holidays, they planned things to do before flights and accommodation, confirming that activities and tours are earlier in the purchase funnel. 
  • Travelers choose destinations based on available activities.
    • Experiences are more important than affordability: 71 percent of Americans consider destination affordability crucial, yet an overwhelming 82 percent rate the availability of experiences and activities as important when choosing their next vacation destination.
  • The report dives deep into travel’s most valuable consumers, or Explorers: This group is the target audience for the emerging experiences industry.
    •  Explorers report higher rates of in-destination spending and longer, more frequent trips and represent the main driver of the travel experiences industry. 
    • Interestingly, Explorers are more likely to prioritize cultural activities, travel more frequently and stay for longer. 
  • There is immense opportunity for both independent travel operators and destinations who want to market to experience-hungry consumers.
    • Customers are eager for unique, passion-based experiences such as workshops, niche walking tours and specialized guided activities: GetYourGuide platform data shows 71 percent year-over-year growth in ticket sales in the Independent Creator category, its highest-growing segment.
